Welcome to Spoke.
This guide is here to help you understand what Spoke is, how the community works, where to find information, how to use WhatsApp without getting overwhelmed, and how to start riding with us.
Spoke is free to join. It is a local-first cycling community built for Summit County riders, while also welcoming part-time residents and visitors who want to plug into a real community while they are here.
The goal is simple: help people find community through bikes.
Let’s go.
Quick Start: Your First 5 Steps
If you are brand new and just want to know what to do first, start here.
1. Join The Main WhatsApp Community
This is where the most immediate community updates happen.
2. Mute Notifications If Needed
WhatsApp can get busy. Muting the chat is not rude. It is healthy.
3. Join The Subgroups That Match Your Riding
Road, mountain, gravel, Ladies of Spoke, Triple Bypass, Nordic, and other groups may evolve over time.
4. Watch For Weekly Updates
Spoke usually shares a Monday update with ride notes, weekend recaps, and upcoming plans.
5. Show Up To A Ride
RSVP is usually not required. If a ride is posted and you want to come, you can generally just show up.
The Saturday Social Ride is the flagship weekly community ride and is typically no-drop.
What Spoke Is
Spoke is a grassroots cycling community in Summit County, Colorado.
We are here to create a more consistent, welcoming, and connected riding culture for locals, part-time residents, visitors, new riders, experienced riders, road cyclists, mountain bikers, gravel riders, social riders, and anyone who wants to move through the world with a little more connection.
Spoke is not just about one person hosting rides and everyone else showing up. It is a growing community built around movement, connection, consistency, and shared experience.
Some rides will be organized. Some rides will be spontaneous. Some will be road, gravel, mountain, social, tempo, recovery, women-led, event-specific, or something we have not created yet.
You do not have to know everyone. You do not have to ride with everyone. You do not have to be best friends with the founder. You do not even have to like every style of riding.
The point is to find your people, your rhythm, your courage, and your place inside a larger Summit County cycling culture.
Our Mission
To create a consistent and welcoming cycling community that empowers people through movement, connection, and shared experience.
Our Vision
To help build a thriving Summit County cycling culture where riders can find connection, confidence, adventure, and belonging through the bike.
Spoke is meant to become a hub: a place where people can find rides, meet other riders, ask questions, organize plans, discover local resources, and build real community with one another.
What Spoke Is Not
Spoke is not a race team.
Spoke is not a clique.
Spoke is not only for fast riders.
Spoke is not only for locals who already know everyone.
Spoke is not a place for ego, gatekeeping, unsafe riding, or making people feel like they do not belong.
Spoke is also not meant to become a constant advertising channel. Local businesses, events, races, clinics, and opportunities can absolutely fit into the ecosystem, but the heart of the group is connection first.
The Culture We Are Building
Connection Over Competition
We love strong riders. We love big climbs. We love people pushing themselves. But the culture here is not built around proving who is the strongest person in the group.
We are here to ride, grow, laugh, suffer a little on the climbs, regroup at the top, and make Summit County feel a little more connected.
Consistency Builds Trust
A community does not become real because of one big event. It becomes real because people keep showing up.
That is why Spoke is working toward consistent rides, consistent communication, consistent updates, and a rhythm that members can trust.
Inclusion Is Intentional
A welcoming community does not happen by accident. It takes practice.
That means paying attention to pace, regrouping, communicating clearly, helping newer riders understand expectations, and creating space for different types of riders.
Adventure Is a Mindset
Road, mountain, gravel, paved path, big climbs, mellow spins, coffee rides, training rides, recovery rides, spontaneous rides — it all counts.
The bike is the doorway.
Movement Heals
For many of us, bikes are not just exercise. They are therapy, confidence, friendship, freedom, and a way to return to ourselves.
Spoke honors that deeper layer too.
Local-First, Visitor-Welcoming
Spoke is built first for the Summit County community.
That means local riders, seasonal workers, part-time residents, and people who are trying to build real connection here matter deeply to the heart of this group.
At the same time, Summit County is a place people visit from all over. If you are here on vacation, visiting for a weekend, spending part of the summer here, or looking for a way to ride with real people instead of feeling like an outsider, you are welcome to plug in respectfully.
This is not a closed club. It is a community with a culture.
Communication Timeline
Spoke is growing into a more consistent communication rhythm so members know where to look and when to expect updates.
Weekly Monday Update
A Monday update usually shares what happened over the weekend, what is coming up, and any important notes for the week ahead.
This may appear as a blog post, WhatsApp announcement, Instagram post, or a combination of all three.
Monthly Newsletter
The monthly newsletter is the bigger community update.
It may include founder notes, member spotlights, ride updates, jersey news, community feedback, seasonal plans, and upcoming opportunities.
WhatsApp Updates
WhatsApp is the most immediate place for ride coordination, quick updates, weather changes, cancellations, and spontaneous plans.
Instagram is used more publicly for storytelling, photos, community growth, ride promotion, and helping new people discover Spoke.
If ride changes or cancellations happen, WhatsApp is the first place to check. Instagram may be updated second.
Website
The website is the official home base.
Use it for blog updates, community information, ride announcements, and broader context.

How WhatsApp Works
WhatsApp is the current community hub for Spoke.
It is useful, fast, and flexible — but it can also get noisy if every conversation happens in one place. That is why we use the main community space and smaller subgroups.
Main Chat
Use the main chat for:
General community updates
Broad questions
Welcoming new members
Major ride announcements
Community-wide information
Light conversation that applies to many people
Subgroups
Use subgroups for:
Specific ride planning
Road ride details
Mountain bike meetups
Gravel ride ideas
Ladies ride planning
Event-specific training
Spontaneous rides
Pace and route discussion
Current or developing subgroups may include:
Road
Mountain
Gravel
Ladies of Spoke
Nordic / Winter Movement
Triple Bypass 2026
Other future ride styles or event-specific groups
These may evolve over time as the community grows.
Announcements
Official updates may also be posted in an announcement-style space so important information does not get buried.
How To Mute WhatsApp Notifications
If the chats feel overwhelming, you are encouraged to mute them.
This is not rude. It is healthy.
To mute a WhatsApp chat:
Open the chat or group.
Tap the group name at the top.
Select Mute notifications.
Choose your preferred length of time.
You can still check in whenever you want without getting every notification.
How To Invite A Friend
Members are encouraged to share Spoke with people who would genuinely enjoy the community.
To share the invite link in WhatsApp:
Open the Spoke community or group.
Tap the group name at the top.
Scroll to the member or invite section.
Choose the option to invite or share the group link.
Send it to someone who feels like a good fit.
Please use good judgment. Spoke is meant to be welcoming, but it is still a community with a culture we are trying to protect.
Ride Types You May See
Spoke is still developing its ride calendar, but the goal is to offer a variety of ride styles as the season grows.
Saturday Social Ride
The Saturday Social Ride is the flagship weekly anchor.
Typical time: Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
Typical meeting point: Rocky Mountain Coffee Roasters on Main Street in Frisco
This ride is designed to be welcoming, social, no-drop, and community-building. Route and pace may vary depending on weather, season, and who shows up.
No-drop means the group makes an intentional effort to regroup and keep people connected. It does not mean every rider will always be at the exact same pace the entire time.
Wednesday Ladies Ride
A Wednesday evening women-led road ride is part of the growing ride structure.
Typical time: Wednesday at 6:15 p.m.
Start locations: May vary
Tempo Rides
Tempo rides are intended for riders who want a steadier, stronger effort.
These may be less social and more training-focused, while still maintaining clear communication and group awareness.
Recovery Rides
Recovery rides are easier-paced rides meant to keep people moving without turning everything into a hammerfest.
Mountain Bike Meetups
There is clear demand for mountain bike meetups.
This area needs member leadership and support because Patrick does not currently own a mountain bike. If you are interested in helping organize mountain bike rides, this is a great place to step forward.
Gravel Rides
Gravel is another growing area of interest and may develop as more members help organize routes and ride days.
Event-Specific Training
Groups may form around events like Triple Bypass, local races, charity rides, or other goals.
These groups can help members coordinate training, transportation, logistics, and shared encouragement.
Ride Expectations And Safety
Spoke is working toward having different rides for different paces and styles.
Not every ride will be for every rider, and that is okay.
The goal is to communicate clearly so people know what they are joining.
Whenever possible, ride posts should include:
Ride type
Start time
Meeting location
Approximate route
Approximate distance
Approximate pace
Drop or no-drop expectation
Regroup points
Weather considerations
Anything riders should know before showing up
If you are unsure whether a ride is right for you, ask.
That is part of what the community is for.
Helmets Are Required
Helmets are required on Spoke rides.
Each Rider Is Responsible For Themselves
Spoke rides are community rides. Each rider is responsible for their own safety, fitness, equipment, route awareness, decisions, and ability to ride in the conditions of the day.
Please make sure your bike is in working order before showing up.
Minors
Riders under 18 should ride with a parent or guardian.
Weather And Cancellations
Summit County weather changes quickly.
If a ride needs to be changed, delayed, or canceled, WhatsApp is the first place to check. Instagram may be updated second.
When in doubt, check WhatsApp before heading out.
What To Bring On A Ride
For most rides, please bring:
A working bike
Helmet
Water
Snacks or fuel
Weather-appropriate layers
Flat repair kit
Spare tube or plugs
Pump or CO2
Phone
ID
Any personal medication or emergency items
Lights, depending on time of day
Summit County weather can change quickly. Bring more layers than you think you need.
Basic Ride Etiquette
Communicate
Call out hazards, turns, slowing, stopping, cars, pedestrians, and anything that affects the group.
Regroup
If a ride is listed as social or no-drop, regroup intentionally.
Respect The Pace
Do not turn every group ride into a race unless the ride was clearly advertised as a hard effort.
Be Kind To New Riders
Everyone was new once.
Ride Safely
Follow traffic laws, ride predictably, and make decisions that protect the group.
Leave The Ego At Home
Strong legs are great. Good energy matters more.
Self-Organized Rides Are Encouraged
Spoke is not meant to be only about official rides.
Members are encouraged to post spontaneous ride ideas, ask who wants to join, and organize with each other.
A simple ride post could look like:
Anyone want to ride Lake Dillon Loop tomorrow at 5:30? Social pace, regrouping as needed. Thinking about starting from Frisco Marina. Weather looks decent, but I’ll confirm tomorrow afternoon.
This community becomes stronger when more people practice leading, inviting, organizing, and advocating for the kind of riding they want.
You do not need to be an expert to invite people on a ride. Just be clear, honest, and thoughtful.
Helping Lead Or Host A Ride
Spoke will grow best when more members help create the culture.
You can help by:
Hosting a ride
Suggesting a route
Helping with mountain bike meetups
Leading a beginner-friendly ride
Organizing a training ride
Creating a women-led ride
Helping with gravel routes
Sharing event logistics
Taking photos
Welcoming new members
Giving feedback
This is a place to practice leadership in a low-pressure way.
You do not have to be perfect. You just have to care.
Photos And Social Media
Photos may be taken during rides or events and shared in Spoke updates, blog posts, newsletters, or social media.
If you prefer not to be photographed or featured publicly, please say so. We want people to feel comfortable and respected.
Community Boundaries
Spoke is open and collaborative, but the integrity of the community matters.
Local Events And Opportunities
Local events, clinics, races, nonprofits, teams, and cycling-related opportunities may be welcome when they serve the community.
Selling Gear
Occasional member-to-member gear posts may be allowed, especially when they are relevant and respectful.
Soliciting And Advertising
Repeated self-promotion, spam, aggressive sales, or unrelated advertising does not fit the culture.
A good rule of thumb:
If it helps riders connect, ride, learn, or participate in the local cycling ecosystem, it probably belongs.
If it mostly extracts attention from the group without giving value back, it probably does not.
Feedback Is Welcome
Spoke is still being built.
Feedback is not only welcome — it is necessary.
You may see changes to ride formats, communication flow, WhatsApp structure, newsletter sections, subgroups, routes, and seasonal programming as the community grows.
If you want different ride styles, different paces, more mountain biking, more training rides, more beginner rides, more women-led rides, more gravel, more social events, or more structure, speak up.
Even better: help build it.

The Deeper Invitation
Spoke started as a simple idea and has been growing one ride, one conversation, and one person at a time.
The future of this community is not just more rides. It is more connection. More confidence. More people finding their place. More locals meeting each other. More visitors feeling welcomed. More riders stepping into leadership. More movement. More belonging.
This is not about one founder standing at the center of everything.
This is about building something that belongs to the community.
So show up. Ask questions. Invite someone. Post the ride. Join the subgroup. Mute the chat when you need to. Come back when you are ready. Try the climb. Regroup at the top. Help someone feel included.
That is how this thing grows.
Let’s go.
